Visitors love to explore all that the Smoky Mountains National Park has to offer. While a classic hike or scenic drive is always a go-to, there are other ways to enjoy the area. 1. Jeep Tours
Instead of taking a scenic drive in your own vehicle, book a Jeep tour. Knowledgeable tour guides will take you around the area. A tour is an excellent option if you don't want to be the one navigating traffic. Another benefit? Some tours start from the city before entering the park and come back after. This means you won’t have to worry about limited parking inside the park. While you’re on the tour, listen carefully to learn more about the history of the popular tourist attraction and much more! Ask your own questions along the way as well!
2. Guided Hikes and Outdoor Programs
If you prefer being outside, opt for a guided hike or outdoor program instead. They are led by park rangers and other volunteers. You can choose a specific hike that covers a topic you’re interested in. For example, the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont offers programs covering aquatic ecology and mammals of the Smokies. Additionally, Friends of the Smokies is a volunteer-led organization that puts on guided hikes of popular trails, such as the Big Creek Trail and the Old Sugarlands Trail. With any of the programs, space is limited. It is a good idea to plan ahead.
3. Horseback Riding
Another one of the unique ways to explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is on the back of a majestic four-legged friend. There are riding stables on both the Tennessee and North Carolina side of the park. They are open to visitors from mid-March to late November. Both stables offer horseback riding tours to visitors as young as 5 years old. There is no prior experience needed! In Tennessee, ride around Cades Cove; the North Carolina stables take you around the Oconaluftee River area. Participants are in for stunning scenery either way! While helmets are provided, visitors should still plan to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants when riding!
Carriage and Hay Rides: The riding stables also offer carriage and hay rides! Travel as the settlers once did. You can be out in the open air and not have to walk! The horses don’t go as fast as a car, so you will be able to see more! Be sure to bring your camera for some great photo opportunities.
